We rarely seem to do well on Caley Thistle's own patch, having won there just twice in history. Our recent visits tend to suggest that the days of conceding four in Inverness are now history, but we've still ended up being beaten most of the time. Another defeat tomorrow simply will not do. We must get something from the point - preferably three points - after our dismal start to the league season.
It could be argued things haven't been going too badly. The away games were at hard venues, while we took a point from a Kilmarnock side that are doing well and should have beaten Aberdeen. However, as a result we've got just one point and one goal after four games - although manager Gus MacPherson amusingly believes we're more positive now than we have been in the past couple of seasons. God knows what we'd be like if we were negative.
Many of our heavy defeats in Caley Thistle were caused by a former player (well, former trialist) Paul Ritchie, who usually took great delight in scoring a hat trick against us. So, it's time for some revenge in the shape of Craig Dargo and Dennis Wyness. Both are former Caley Thistle players - with Wyness only leaving a few months ago to come to Paisley - and both linked up pretty well during their time in the north. Billy Mehmet may have scored a hat trick against Dumbarton, but he missed some sitters against Aberdeen should be dropped. A Wyness and Dargo partnership could pay dividends, especially with some decent supply from midfield. Chances are it won't happen - Mehmet is almost certain to start and it'll be one of Dargo and Jim Hamilton that partners him.
The rest of the team will probably be the one that started against Aberdeen a fortnight ago. Garry Brady has looked like a different player this season to the poor midfielder we had last year, but his good form means Andy Dorman has been shunted out to the right wing and his runs into the box aren't quite as effective from there. Will Haining is fit after going off injured against the Dons and Tonet is back from suspension. The only absentee is David Barron, who could be out for six weeks with a nasty knee injury.
And, speaking of nasty knee injuries, we'll be up against our old pal Ross Tokely tomorrow. The thuggish rightback is still hated by Saints fans for his shocking tackle on Chris Kerr nine years ago and is usually given dogs abuse when we face Caley Thistle. We could do with him responding by making the sort of mistakes he made a few other teams last season and an own goal would be appreciated - it's probably more likely than one of our own players scoring.
Caley Thistle have yet to win at home this season, although have managed two impressive wins on the road against Aberdeen and Falkirk. They seem to have a reasonable squad despite the summer departures of Wyness and Marius Niculae, and pulled off an impressive transfer coup when they signed Rooney before the transfer window closed. That's former Stoke striker Adam Rooney, rather than the Wayne variety. They'll certainly cause us a few problems and in Andrew Barrowman have a player who certainly knows the way to goal.
We'll almost certainly fail to score tomorrow, and I think Caley Thistle will score a couple to take all three points.
