Inverness Caley Thistle v Saints Preview

It's arguably our only realistic chance of taking three points before the split. We may have beaten Rangers already this season and they may be in melt down, but the chances of another victory against them are slim. We've also struggled against Hibs and Motherwell in the league this year (although did well against 'Well in the cup). However, we've beaten Caley Thistle twice this season and we have to go for another victory tomorrow.

We desperately need points. We haven't won any of our league games this year and the longer that run goes on, the more worrying things get. The time for draws is past - another couple of wins would probably mean we can relax and start preparing for next season. We're currently on 30 points and it's generally accepted in the English Premiership that a tally of 40 points should see you safe. However, a quick bit of research shows that only three teams have been relegated from the SPL with a tally of 30 or more points since the split was introduced. One was us in 2001 when we ended up with 30 points, while another was Dunfermline in 2007 when they had 32 points. The other was Dundee in 2005 who went down with 33 points in a dramatic final day that saw the bottom four sides separated by just three points. So, if history is anything to go by, two wins should just about see us safe - or we'll set a new record. Ideally, two wins and a draw from the pre-split games should allow us to enjoy the final few games as well as the Scottish Cup semi-final.

Like Rangers, our captain wears number six - but unlike Rangers, he hasn't been involved in a drinking session or making childish signs, so John Potter will be in the Saints defence tomorrow. Scott Cuthbert will probably be the man partnering him, with Will Haining on the bench. With Hugh Murray still suspended the midfield should be interesting. Andy Dorman will start and Garry Brady should too as he's scored in our previous two games against Caley Thistle this season. It's anyone's guess who partners them. Steven Thomson and Gary Mason will probably get the nod, although Stephen McGinn might have a chance after scoring for Scotland's under-21s during the week.

Up front, Craig Dargo and Billy Mehmet should start (unless we ludicrously go with one up front). The pair have been developing a good partnership in recent weeks and Dargo will relish the chance to score against his former club. Sadly, fellow ex Caley Thistle man Dennis Wyness is injured, meaning Sean Burns may be put on the bench along with striker Jim Hamilton. Chris Smith, Tom Brighton, Steven Robb, Stephen O'Donnell and Franco Miranda are all still out through injury.

Caley Thistle were pretty poor this season until they replaced manager Craig Brewster with Terry Butcher. Since then they have turned things around - aside from their recent defeat to Falkirk. They picked up a brilliant win over Rangers at Ibrox and also had a handy victory over Hibs. It's made things extremely interesting at the bottom and a win tomorrow would lift them above Saints.

Caley Thistle's strength is arguably in midfield, where Ian Black - who is set to join Hearts in the summer - can usually be found pulling the strings, while Roy McBain and Russell Duncan are usually fairly solid alongside him. With keeper Ryan Esson suspended, Michael Fraser will make his first appearance for a few months and it'll be interesting to see if that has any effect. Things have been difficult for Caley Thistle's strikers this season, but Ritchie Foran has been a threat since his arrival from Southend while Dougie Imrie is always a threat.

I'm not going to make a prediction tomorrow as it's not a case of wondering if we'll win - we must win to put some space between ourselves and the relegation zone.
