The Renfrewshire derby should have taken place four times in the league this season, after Morton built up a massive lead by Christmas time, and their fans took great delight in talking about how they would pass us on their way up. Rather amusingly, not only did Saints stay up but Morton blew their massive lead and dropped back to fourth! Impressive.
The reason for this is not known, although the best excuse is to do with a betting scandal. Allegedly, when Morton were 12 points clear some Morton staff (be they players, back room etc), bet against Morton getting promoted. Sounds a load of rubbish to me, but the unwashed down the road aren't the most intelligent. A large number of them believed it, and even attacked their players because of it! They then accused Saints fans of starting the rumours, as we obviously forced them to believe the rumours as well.
Fact is, Morton loost the title because they were, and are, pish. End of story.
Morton's antics cost Saints a bit of money from increased crowds, which is why we still have a poor squad and only three new signings. One of them, John Baird, will be missing tomorrow due to injury, but the other two should play. There will probably be a few other absentees, but apart from that it will be a strong team.
There might be a trophy up for grabs but, as I said earlier, I don't really care whether we win or lose it. As long as we avoid injuries and suspensions I'll be happy.
