Everyone's probably sick to death of hearing about the relegation fight, so here's a quick recap ahead of tomorrow. Dunfermline are bottom, a point behind Saints and five behind Motherwell. A win for the two teams that play black and white would mean that there's just two points between the three teams with one game left. A win for Motherwell makes them safe and, combined with a Dunfermline win, would put Saints bottom. A Saints win and a defeat for the Pars sends them down and makes next week meaningless. That's how tight it all is.
Motherwell are one of two teams, the other being Hearts, who have not beaten Saints this season. Add that to the fact they have won just one of their last eleven matches and you realise this is the sort of game that Saints are very good at losing - witness our rather helpful donation of three goals and points to Dundee United earlier in the season.
Saints boss Gus MacPherson is likely to go with the same team that beat United last weekend, meaning Alex Burke and Andy Millen - who were surprise inclusions last week - will keep their place. Mirren Mad - and many Saints fans - have been calling for a natural left footer to be played on the left of midfield for weeks, and it finally happened last week when Mark Corcoran started and did well. He's unlikely to lose his place either.
On the injury front, Saints are without midfielders Craig Molloy and Stephen O'Donnell and, if I'm being honest, I'd be surprised to see either in the black and white again this season. On the suspension front, Richard Brittain is out for the last two games of the season, while Eddie Malone is also unavailable after getting himself sent off in a reserve match.
Motherwell also have some suspension problems. Top defender Mark Reynolds was sent off against Dunfermline in a 4-1 hammering on Monday night, as was top scorer Scott McDonald. 'Well appealed the suspension, but the fact they waited until 5pm last night - the very last minute possible - to lodge an appeal suggests it was only made in the vain hope the appeals panel wouldn't be able to hear it before Saturday, rather than on the basis he shouldn't have been sent off. Fortunately, the SFA saw through this blatant attempt to cheat the system by both Motherwell and Dunfermline, who had a similar appeal against a red card for Scott Wilson rejected. McDonald has scored 16 goals this season - although, like the rest of his team, none against us - so the news is very welcome.
One of the players that is likely to start tomorrow, given the suspensions and injury to Jim Paterson, is former Saint Steven McGarry. The forward said in the press at the start of the week that he'd like us to stay up, however I don't think Dunfermline fans need worry too much about him becoming the new Alan Main. For one, Motherwell are still in the relegation fight, and there's also the fact that an own goal may be slightly more obvious than some dodgy goalkeeping! In fact, it's far more likely he'll score against us. He has yet to score in the league for the Steelmen, and his first goal for Ross County came against us in an away game when both sides were fighting relegation. Hmmm.
So, we need to win - but can we? No. LAst week was merely false hope. With Saints being Saints, we'll kindly help Motherwell end their poor run of form and secure safety. Aren't we nice?
