As far as diddy cups go, this must be one of the diddiest. The closest to it I can think of is the LDV Vans Trophy in England, which involves the clubs in divisions two and three. Their trophy, however, has a major difference. The final is a great day out at the Millenium Stadium, and it used to be at Wembley before it was knocked down. Where does the final for our cup get played? Somewhere like Broadwood. Ooh. For a lot of fans in England, their competition presents the only realistic chance of ever seeing their club in a cup final, and the same could be said for our competition. So why not give the players something to look forward to, like a day out at Hampden, Ibrox or Parkhead?
Anyway, rant over. Saints have a full squad to choose from (won't be saying that much this season). Will gus go for a 3-5-2 or a 4-4-2. Will Brian McGinty start alongside Mixu, or will it be Eddie Annand? What about John Baird? These and many other questions won't be keeping me awake tonight, but they might in the future. As well as Mixu and Baird, Mark Reilly should make his Saints debut tomorrow. Three new signings. What an exciting summer it's been!
By comparison, Ross County have signed loads of folk. Gary McSwegan, Sean Kilgannon and Stuart Taylor are just a few of their new players. Thankfully, ex Saint Taylor is injured so won't get his traditional goal against us, but title winner Steven McGarry might.
It might be a competitive game in a cup we could win but, if I'm being honest, I'm not too bothered about it. I won't cry and go in the huff if we lose. As long as we don't get a hammering and avoid injuries and suspensions I'll be pleased.
