Aside from the Dumbarton goal spree, the early season indications are that we're going to have the same problem as last year - a lack of goals. The early signs suggest we're perhaps creating a few more chances than this time last season, however the strikers are just not taking them. Billy Mehmet has three league goals already but could arguably have had twice as many, while Garry Brady is the only other Saints player to have scored in the SPL this season. It's a situation that needs to improve - starting tomorrow.
Last week's win over Inverness Caley Thistle was a good result, and a much needed one. One point from our first four games was a poor return, regardless of the opposition, and the first win of the season was badly needed. Now that we have it, it's time to build on it. By all accounts, we were poor on Saturday until Caley Thistle hit the bar, at which point we woke up and dominated the game. It's time to do that from start to finish tomorrow.
It'll likely be the same team that started last week's game up north, with Mehmet and Jim Hamilton set to rough up the visiting defenders. Brady seems to be a different player this season and will hopefully continue that, while Jack Ross has been superb at right back and will face his former employers for the first time. David Barron and Tonet are both out injured, although if his performances so far are anything to go by the Spaniard will be no great loss.
Falkirk have somehow managed to have a worse start to the season than ourselves, which is quite impressive. They're currently below us in the table and only registered their first points with a win against Hearts last week. Now that they're off and running they, like us, will be looking to build up some momentum and start getting some more wins on the board. Last season they dished out some fairly heavy defeats to us so there is a chance the same could happen tomorrow depending which mode the players form both sides are in. Among the Falkirk lineup is likely to be former Buddie Burton O'Brien. His transfer to Blackburn Rovers with David MacNamee in 1999 provided much needed income to the club, but didn't work out as well as he would have hoped for. Despite a spell in Scotland since leaving us, this is his first trip to Love Street since his departure and it will be interesting to see what sort of reaction he gets.
We desperately need to end our goal drought at home, but sadly I don't see it happening. Falkirk to win - but only narrowly, rather than by the margins they managed last season.
