The League Challenge Cup is usually referred to by supporters as The Diddy Cup. It comprises the thirty teams in the SFL and the final is usually held at somewhere boring like Broadwood or McDairmid Park. The English equivalent is a bit more exciting as the final takes place live on Sky at the Millenium Stadium (or maybe Wembley). Thing is, the team that has won the League Challenge Cup the past two seasons has won the first division, so maybe it is worth winning after all!
Saints have just three injury problems ahead of tomorrow's game against second division Forfar Athletic. Mixu Paatelainen is still nowhere near fit, whilst Ryan McCay is still recovering from surger. Striker Brian McGinty will also miss out, which means we might have a chance. New signing Billy Mehme is likely to partner Stewart Kean up front and it is also likely that Mark Corcoran will be on the left wing. As for John Potter and Ian Maxwell, who knows?
Last season Saints played Forfar in the league cup and were promptly embarrased 5-2, thanks partly to a Kevin McGowne's one Captain Chaos style performance of the season. Paul Tosh scored twice but thankfully won't be scoring any tomorrow as he's injured for a few months, along with Forfar keeper Michael Brown. The latter won't be too much of a problem as they have managed to pull off the impressive signing of former Kilmarnock and Livingston keeper Colin Meldrum. The injury to Tosh, however, is a major problem for Forfar as he has been their top scorer over the past few seasons.
Former Saint David Lowing had his best ever game for Forfar against Saints in the cup last season and will be looking for more of the same tomorrow. Lowing was angry when John Coughlin decided he was no longer needed at Love Street two years ago and no doubt enjoyed last season's win, even if Coughlin is (thankfully) no longer with us. Hopefully he won't do anywhere near as well tomorrow.
It might be a diddy cup, but the omens if you win it are good. We're also out for revenge after last season's humiliation so I'm going for a 2-1 Saints win.
