Saints v Greenock Morton Preview

Last updated : 22 July 2005 By Stuart Gillespie
Let me make my views on this piece of silverware quite, quite clear: I think it's a waste of time. Saints and Morton are always going to get to the final and it's stupid game to have as a pre-season match as there's a good chance of suspensions and injuries being paid. I didn't care about it when we were beating sides like Viewfield Rovers in the final and I don't care about it now, win or lose. It's little more than a glorified friendly that season ticket holders are chargeds for. As a result, I won't be going and if anyone fancies doing a report, feel free.

Now, with that out of the way, on to the preview bit. Saints are likely to field new signing Mark Corcoran from the start tomorrow, althoug what part fellow summer signings John Potter and Ian Maxwell will play I'm not sure of yet. Brian McGinty is injured (no doubt that's his injury for the season out the way), as are Ryan McCay and Mixu Paatelainen, so all three will miss out. In the past Saints have fielded trialists in this game (told you it was meaningless), however there doesn't seem to be any sign of that happening tomorrow. As a result, it looks as if it will be a front pairing of Stewart Kean and John Baird, Both can score goals but they aren't going to scare a defence with their phyiscal presence. It's an issue that needs addressed before the new season begins.

Over the summer months Morton have made a few signings themselves as they bid to make it third time lucky in their quest for the second division title. They've signed Andy McLaren from Dundee United, Alex Walker from Rangers and Derek Lilley from Livingston. The past few years have seen them sign various good strikers, such as peter Weatherston and Chris Templeman, yet they've still failed to win the league. I know they aren't bright down Greenock way, but do they not realise it might be a good idea getting the defence sorted before signing star strikers?

Score prediction: who cares? As long as we come out of it with no injuries or suspensions I won't be too bothered.
