As fixtures go, this must be one of the most appealing of the season (until we play Gretna next week). Three games between Saints and Killie this season have produced the grand total of one goal to date (no prizes for guessing it wasn't Saints who scored it). Our scoring record is rubbish while Kilmarnock are having a terrible season, so don't be surprised if there is a low crowd. While the game could help decide who finishes tenth, it's hardly a major selling point and not something that will get punters turning up in their droves and brimming with excitement.
Still, it's something the management at Love Street will feel is worthwhile which is why we can probably expect a reasonably strong team that's along the same lines as last week. David van Zanten is injured while Hugh Murray is suspended. Mark Corcoran has signed a pre-contract deal with Hamilton and won't play for Saints again and he might not be the only one. All the rumours suggest this week that van Zanten, Franco Miranda and Stewart Kean are all heading elsewhere, so Saints boss Gus MacPherson may decide to leave them in the stands for the last few games.
That should provide an opportunity for the youngsters and fringe players to come in. Stephen O'Donnell surely deserves a chance to stake his claim for a new deal and he has been doing well in the reserves, while Richard Brittain has been an unused sub for the last week. Quite why these guys have been benched while Garry Brady has been getting a game is a mystery. Brittain and O'Donnell have been injured, but Brady hasn't and a decision on his future should have been taken a long time ago.
Andy Dorman scored a screamer of a goal last week and will be looking for another this week after celebrating his birthday. Ian Maxwell is another birthday boy and will hopefully return if he overcomes the injury that kept him out last week. If not, it'll be same again at the back - although it would be nice to see Mark Docherty or Marc McAusland given their first start.
The end of the season cannot come quickly enough for Kilmarnock. Injuries and player departures mean they have struggled and have found themselves out of the top six for the first time in a number of years. Financial worries also caused problems, with at least one January transfer deal scuppered by the bank. Manager Jim Jeffries was supposedly less than impressed but has stayed put and he'll have his work cut out over the summer. Guys like David Fernandez and Allan Johnstone are still decent, despite being a bit old, but have missed several games through injury, while the departures of Steven Naismith and Colin Nish have caused a problem that has to be addressed in the summer. Former Saint Allan Russell has already been signed from Airdrie United to try to solve that problem.
This will probably be another dull game and end up goalless, but if someone does score it'll probably be Kilmarnock. I reckon they'll sneak it with the game's only goal.
