It's been three years since the last won, which Saints won 3-2 in the League Cup thanks to a Mark Yardley wonder goal in extra time. If Morton weren't so useless, we'd have played them in the league by now, but they comically blew a massive lead whilst top of the second division a few years ago admit rumours of betting scams.
Sure, we've played them in the Renfrewshire Cup over the past few years, but does that really count? Not really, as it's basically a glorified friendly, although the Morton fans seem to take it seriously thanks to the diddy status they now have. For previous rounds of this competition, I've said I'm not bothered about the result as long as we don't get injuries or suspensions. That changes now, partly becaus ethere is a cup final place at stake and partly because it's Morton. I'd take a win tonight over a win against Hamilton on Saturday any day of the week.
Saints will be missing Simon Lappin for tonight's match after his red card against Airdrie United at the weekend, whilst Mark Reilly and Ryan McCay are both definitely out with injury. Craig Hinchcliffe will be fit enough for a place on the bench, as may Brian McGinty. Only Hugh Murray, Lappin and McGinty have played for Saints in Renfrewshire derbies in the past, Lappin scoring in the cup game whilst McGinty was sent off. Andy Millen has also played in Renfrewshire derbies, only he did it for Morton, and also managed to be sent off! Hopefully he won't repeat that trick again.
Morton had Stewart Greacen sent off on Saturday, but as that wasn't for violent conduct he'll be playing. The real danger men are former Dundee United players Derek Lilley and Andy McLaren, who could cause us all sorts of problems tonight.
Tonight's game should eb a cracker, and the crowd could eb as high as 7,000. Morton fans will be unbearable if they win, and I think they'll sneak it 1-0 in extra time due to the Saints players being tired.
