The absense of top flight football from Paisley has lasted a little longer than planned, in more than one way. Obviously, it had been hoped we'd start the season with a home game, which didn't happen, but it had also been hoped we'd return quicker than we did. Still, let's not worry about that now, but instead worry about ensuring we don't suffer another quick return to the first divison.
After last week's fantastic win over Inverness Caley Thistle, there are unlikely to be any changes to the starting lineup. Andy Millen and Billy Mehmet may return to the bench, whilst Brian McGinty is still injured.
This should mean that Mark Corcoran will have to make do with a place on the subs bench tomorrow. Coco destroyed Motherwell in the Scottish Cup tie back in January and had TV pundits raving about him. Perhaps he'll come off the bench tomorrow and do the same on his SPL debut.
There will be no Duncan Ferguson at Love Street tomorrow so we'll have to make do with John Sutton and Stewart Kean for just now. That's no bad thing as both scored last week (although Kean might not have depending what you read) and both will have a big part to play in keeping us in the SPL for more than a season. The defence will hopefully remain pretty solid, so it's up to those two to turn draws into wins.
In 2000, Kilmarnock gatecrashed the flag raising party and Motherwell be looking to do the same tomorrow. They're also after revenge for the cup defeat. They've changed manager since then, with Maurice Malpas replacing the Australia bound Terry Butcher. He didn't get off to the best of starts, losing 2-1 to Rangers as Motherwell suffered at the hands of Charlie Adam once again.
It seems these days Motherwell have more players in their first team squad who are products of Murray Park than the Rangers squad, with Ross McCormack joining Brian McLean and Graeme Smith in the summer. Former Saint Steven McGarry also signed for the Steelmen this year and has yet to break his duck, so no doubt that will happen tomorrow, just like it did when he was at Ross County.
Our record against Motherwell wasn't that great in 2000/01, as we took just one point from the four games, which was part of the reason we were relegated. A vast improvement is needed to make sure we stay up this time around.
