In the second league game of the season, Stranraer came to Love Street for a point and got it, sending most of the North Bank to sleep in a game that made us long for the free flowing football of a Clyde team managed by Billy Reid. We're not the only team to suffer from this and the problem is that it works. Brechin were far more attacking in December but left with nothing, whilst Stranraer were boring and left with a point.
You can understand why Stranraer feel the need to play like this. They've managed back to back promotions in the two seasons prior to this one (yes Morton fans, it can be done) and I don't think have ever spent two consesutive seasons in the first division. So, survival was their immediate aim, even if it meant playing the way the likes of San Marino used to play at Hampden. At home they are a bit more attacking, and beat Hamilton 5-4 on Boxing Day. However, last week's 5-0 hammering at the hands of Clyde will probably make them even less likely to come out of their box.
Former Saints Ian Ross and Lee Sharp may be playing against us. Ross was good, whilst Sharp was awful after being signed to replace the injured Ross during our SPL season. He was almost as bad as Jim Gardner. This should ensure he scores tomorrow! Most Saints fans will no doubt aim their abuse at Stephen Aitken, who spent many years playing and getting sent off against us for Morton.
Saints actually managed to score some goals in midweek and, even more amazingly, John Sutton got one to end his goal drought. Just as well we got them on Tuesday, as I couldn't have seen us ending our dry run tomorrow. We'll probably go with the same eleven who started against Spartans, although Hugh Murray or Simon Lappin may come back into the side. Kirk Broadfoot, Craig Hinchcliffe and Brian McGinty are still missing.
Score prediction? Well, in case you haven't quite picked up on this from the preview, Stranraer aren't very attack minded. Therefore, I predict a 0-0 draw.
