One kick of the ball on May 2, 1998 was enough to secure Hugh Murray's place in Saints history. It may only have been his first season as a first teamer and he may not have won a trophy, but that goal may very well have saved a club.
With Stewart Gilmour just installed as chairman - having seen off the rival takeover bid from the dodgy Reg Brealey - staying up was a must as Saints travelled to Stirling. Having been on a poor run of form - including a poor home defeat to Airdrieonians the week before - it wasn't looking good for the Buddies. However, early in the second half Shuggy produced a great strike, which turned out to be the only goal of the game and keep Saints safe.
Ironically, the captain could miss his big night. Murray limped off during Sunday's shocker against Celtic and might not be fit enough to play tonight. Aside from that it's the usual worries - no Craig Molloy, Eddie Malone, Ian Maxwell or Craig Dargo. There's no Chris Smith either - he's away with Scotland - which means Mark Howard should make his debut. There's also rumours of a few trialists, but don't hold your breath.
The result doesn't matter, the important thing is a big crowd turns out to make it the occasion Shuggy deserves.
