Spartans v Saints Preview

Last updated : 04 February 2006 By Stuart Gillespie
Spartans have knocked out two SFL teams on their cup run this season, third division Berwick Rangers and Queens Park. Two years ago they knocked out both Arbroath and Alloa Athletic before losing 4-0 at home to SPL side Livingston. As I said, it won't be easy.

There has been a lot of controversy regarding the venue for this game, with it being moved all over the place and several Saints officials and fans being unhappy about it. Fact is it's at City Park and we'll have to deal with it. I'm happy to be going there, I don't see any problem with it being there (or I didn't until I saw the quality of the tickets). Let's just hope there isn't any trouble.

Of course, whilst Saints have managed to react with dignity during the whole stadium affair, Spartans haven't. At every possibility they have gone running to the press, who have lapped everything up without a moment's notice. Saints chairman Stewart Gilmour isn't going tomorrow due to personal reasons, something the press are suspicious of. No doubt a member of the Saints board could present Gilmour's death certificate to the Spartans board and they'd still complain!

Saints have the usual injury problems, with Kirk Broadfoot and Craig Hinchcliffe out, whilst Brian McGinty and Billy Mehmet are extremely doubtful. Hugh Murray is fit and could start, and Saints manager Gus MacPherson needs to get things right tactically. City Park is bumpy and doesn't suit wingers as it's narrow, so a five man midfield may not be the best option.

A prediction? I'm not going to say anything over than it will be hard. However, after all the rubbish we've had to endure, I'd love it if we gave them a hammering.
