It was the second game in three days for many of the players after they saw off Stenhousemuir in the SFA Youth Cup on Sunday. However, they needed extra-time to do so and while the side was changed it's fair to say tiredness played a part in the defeat
The hosts took the lead inside the first minute but Saints were level at the break thanks to a Declan Hughes goal and would even have been in front had Jack Smith not slipped.
Caley Thistle scored early in the second half and Saints just couldn't find an equaliser, John McGinn stopped by a spectacular save. Caley Thistle looked to have finished things by scoring a minute from the end but there was still time for Saints to win and score a penalty, Smith doing the honours, but it wasn't enough to get a point.
Meanwhile, the draw for the fourth round of the Youth Cup will see Saints go to Falkirk on Sunday, November 25.
