Mr Richmond - an experienced official by today's standards - was the referee when we beat Celtic in the Scottish Cup last season. The nice man even gave us a penalty, although his "must help the Old Firm team" mode kicked in after he realised what he'd done and he failed to send off Stephen McManus for his tackle on Craig Dargo. But I'm nit picking. Oddly, that was his only Saints game last season, but he clearly likes helping us out against Celtic as his only game involving us the previous season saw us leave Parkhead with a point!
He was rather more active in 2006/07 in our games as he took charge of six matches, including a cup win and a cup defeat. The win was over Stenhousemuir, when we cruised into the lead before Stenny had a player sent off. The defeat came at Tannadice, where we found ourselves two goals down but got things back to 2-2. However, we lost in injury time that was additional to what the fourth official had indicated, and we also suffered a few dodgy calls from the officials - although that was mainly a linesman, rather than Mr Richmond. Other games that season were a crucial draw at Dunfermline, a defeat to Rangers - with some of the usual refereeing decisions you can expect - and a draw against Hearts in which Paul Hartley was amusingly sent off.
There was some more cup success with Mr Richmond the year we won the first division as he took charge of our eventual victory over Spartans. He also took charge of three league games and it was our 2-1 win over Clyde that stands out as their manager, Graham Roberts, had a superb post match rant about diving and officials ruining the game - even though we were correctly given a penalty and they had someone sent off. The other games were a win over the Fake Saints, a draw with Dundee and a win over Queen of the South when Charlie Adam scored a late, late winner.
We had a good record with Mr Richmond in 2004/05 as well, winning games against Ross County, Raith Rovers and the Fake Saints. The latter is noteworthy as they managed to get three players sent off! The record isn't that great if you look at the previous two seasons - a defeat to Queen of the South where Mark Crilly was correctly dismissed, a draw and a defeat to Falkirk, a heavy defeat at Parkhead in the cup and a win at Palmerston against Queens. Overall, things aren't too bad, with 2004 to 2006 seeming to be the highlights!
Ayr's second division status means you have to go back three years since they last had Mr Richmond in charge, and even that was a League Cup game - a 2-0 win over Berwick Rangers. You then have to go back to late 2003 for his last league games involving the Honest Men - a defeat to 10 man Queens and a win over Raith Rovers. The only other game Soccerbase shows is a 2-2 draw with Clyde in 2002.
Mr Richmond has already taken charge of three games this season, including an opening day match at New Broomfield that saw him show two red cards! He's been relatively lenient with the yellow cards aside from those incidents and hopefully he continues in that trend on Wednesday.
