It's about 4.05pm at Fir Park on May 12, 2007. Mr Tumilty has just awarded a penalty to Motherwell after Andy Millen handelled the ball inside the box. Ross McCormack scores it to put us two goals down. With Dunfermline a goal up, we're about to go bottom of the SPL with just one game to go. An immediate return to the first division is looking good.
With nothing to lose, Gus MacPherson throws on John Sutton and Billy Mehmet. Sutton gets one within a few minutes when his header sneak's through keeper Colin Meldrum's legs. Mehmet equalises minutes later with a fine shot. Caley Thistle equalise against the Pars, Sutton rams home the winner, then Caley Thistle score again in stoppage time. We are safe.
Of course, aside from the penalty, Mr Tumilty played little part in proceedings but I'll grab any excuse to relieve that day. It was just his second ever Saints game, the first being earlier that season when we drew with Caley Thistle.
Last season, he did four. One was a 1-0 win over Gretna and two others were against Kilmarnock - a goalless draw and a Saints defeat. The other came at Ibrox where, obeying SFA guidelines, he sent off Will Haining when we looked like making a game of things. At least one of the bookings wasn't merited. His only Saints game this season is the aforementioned Hamilton game, which we won 1-0 thanks to Craig Dargo bagging Love Street's final goal.
Curiously, Mr Tumilty's only Falkirk game so far this season was also against Hamilton, with the Bairns winning 4-1. Last season he only did one - a goalless draw at Tannadice - and it's the same story for 2006/07. That match was a 3-1 win over Caley Thistle when Anthony Stokes scored a hat-trick and the visitors had Ian Black sent off. According to Soccerbase, Falkirk were actually involved in Mr Tumilty's first match in professional football, a narrow cup win over Brechin.
Interestingly, Mr Tumilty has only sent off one player so far this season. Will he continue that trend on Saturday?
