On May 12, 2007 it was Mr Tumilty who took charge of our game at Motherwell. He awarded them an early second half penalty - probably correctly - which they scored to go two goals up and almost relegate us. Saints then launched an unbelievable comeback and, thanks to John Sutton and Billy Mehmet, we somehow managed a 3-2 win to stay in the SPL. An unbelievable day, never to be forgotten.
Anyway, enough about that. Last season Mr Tumilty refereed four of our games, and there was some controversy. A goalless draw with Kilmarnock and a narrow win over Gretna were relatively incident free, but the other games weren't. One saw us lose 4-0 at Ibrox when many people feel Will Haining was wrongly sent off (imagine that happening at one of the Old Firm). The other was a defeat at Kilmarnock, with keeper Chris Smith apparently fouled when Killie scored the only goal.
The Motherwell miracle was one of just two Saints games he refereed in 2006/07, the other being a home draw with Inverness Caley Thistle. Going by Soccerbase, that's the grand total of our games he's done - he hasn't been in charge of any of our games this season.
It will, however, be his third Hamilton game. His others have both been away games that the Accies have lost - 4-1 at Falkirk and 2-0 at Motherwell. He only did two of their games when they were in the first division last season - crucial wins over St Johnstone and Dundee, sending off an opposition player in the latter match. And that seems to be your lot as far as Hamilton are concerned.
To sum up, this season Mike Tumilty has onle sent off one player - and a Morton one at that. His card count seems to vary between one or two yellows to five or six during a game, which is still relatively lenient. Hopefully he lets Saturday's game flow and isn't as bad as last week's inexperienced official.
