Like our match against Ross County last month it was a game we had to win twice. It looked as if we'd done the job as we went into injury time 2-1 up but incredibly, not for the first time, we let a cup tie against Aberdeen slip from our grasp. After being bossed in extra-time we managed to get to penalties and prevailed 4-2 - no Buddie missing their kick.
Saints brought Sam Parkin, Kenny McLean and Gary Teale into the side and the changes worked as early as the sixth minute as Steven Thompson's header from Dougie Imrie hit the bar and Parkin scored the rebound. However, a mistake by Craig Samson when he went for a cross saw Scott Vernon head in the equaliser as the sides went in level at the break.
About 20 minutes from the end Saints were back in front thanks to a fine McLean goal and, despite Aberdeen having chances, it looked as if that would be enough for a place in the semi-finals. However, in a repeat of 2011's Scottish Cup meeting Aberdeen bagged a stoppage time equaliser, Josh Magennis breaking Buddies hearts this time.
That meant an extra half hour in the Granite City and it seems Aberdeen dominated proceedings but Saints should have won it at the end when Lewis Guy was brought down inside the box, the referee instead deciding to book him for diving.
That led to slightly more penalties in the form of a shoot out - not the best news considering our record from the spot in recent months. Guy scored first before Stephen Hughes missed for the Dons to give Saints an early lead. The next five were converted to leave Saints 4-2 up and when Cammy "Dennis Bergkamp" Smith missed the next one Saints were on their way back to Hampden for the first time since March 2010.
