We managed to frustrate and stifle the league leaders and create a few chances of our own before we went behind with 12 minutes left. Even then, we still had chances and almost snatched a point in the last minute.
Danny Lennon rang the changes after the midweek win over Aberdeen and it was clear he was playing for a point. Out went Craig Dargo, Aaron Mooy, Jure Travner and David van Zanten, with Paul McGowan not allowed to play. In came Kenny McLean, Lee Mair, Marc McAusland, JIm Goodwin and Paddy Cregg.
An incredibly defensive system, especially with four centre-halfs, but it very nearly worked. Chances were few and far between for both sides, with Michael Higdon and Steven Thomson going close for Saints in the first half and Anthony Stokes nodding wide for the hosts.
Things weren't much better after the break but 12 minutes from the end Commons cracked home a 20 yard shot to put Celtic in front.
We had two chances to equalise both, oddly, falling to John Potter. The first, from 25 yards, went just over before in stoppage time he volleyed a great chance wide - seems to have been one of those occasions you don't want the ball to fall to a centre-half.
So, pointless, but encouraging. A similar performance at Ibrox next week could yield something - but let's hope Walter Smith's men can beat Hamilton tomorrow.
