As responses to an embarrassing hammering at the hands of Falkirk go, going to Parkhead and leaving with a point is a damn good one. As expected, Saints boss Gus MacPherson went with a 4-5-1 and made several changes to the team, with Stephen McGinn, Alan Reid and Mark Corcoran coming in for Stewart Kean, Garry Brady and the departed Chris Birchall. John Potter was also dropped but, with Will Haining injured, it was Ian Maxwell who replaced him - despite the fact he only played his first game in five months on Tuesday!
It obviously worked. Saints frustrated Celtic and then, with 15 minutes to go, Billy Mehmet's shot was parried by Mark Brown and Stephen McGinn tucked away the rebound. The midfielder, grandson of former Celtic chairman Jack (as we're going to hear a lot in the next few days), scored his only other Saints goal at Parkhead last season when we lost 5-1.
Celtic have a habit of producing late turnarounds and, sure enough, with five minutes to go they drew level through substitute Derek Riordan. However, there was to be no late winner, as Saints held on for a superb and well deserved point.
A fantastic performance from Saints that produced an unlikely point and edged us away from Kilmarnock. Same performance and commitment in the next few weeks and months please!
