Inverness Caley Thistle 2-1 Saints

Last updated : 01 October 2011 By Stuart Gillespie

It would seem we never got going today and it could have been a return to the old days of losing by three or four up north had Caley Thistle had a proper striker. They didn't and we can only be thankful for that.

Despite doing well last week - and Danny Lennon moaning about him not being in the Scotland under-21 squad - Kenny McLean was dropped, with Nigel Hasselbaink coming back in. I can only assume that meant Paul McGowan was back in midfield, so it's no surprise we struggled.

Richie Foran missed a great chance inside the first minute and the home side dominated before the first goal arrived midway through the first half - for us! Gary Teale whipped in a corner and Marc McAusland headed into the net for his first goal of the season.

Sadly, the lead only lasted eight minutes, Foran redeeming himself by setting up Andrew Shinnie for the equaliser. Despite that, Steven Thompson had a chance before the break but was denied by Ross Tokely.

Sadly, there was no improvement from Saints after the break and Tade missed some great chances before scoring in rather fortunate circumstances just 12 minutes from time. McGowan had been moved forward by this point and did score in stoppage time, but the goal was ruled out for offside.

A bad, bad day for Saints. This was a chance to put distance between ourselves and the bottom, but not for the first time we blew it. Up next after the international break? Rangers at Ibrox. Super.
