The result ends a wait of more than six months for an away league win and ensures we will finish no lower than ninth. Results elsewhere mean we're now eighth, three points clear of Aberdeen and just one behind Killie. The win also gives us our highest ever SPL points tally - and we still have two games to go!
There were two changes to the side that beat Hibs on Sunday and neither was a surprise - Darren McGregor coming in for the suspended Marc McAusland and Dougie Imrie replacing Graham Carey.
The last two games between the sides have seen early goals and tonight was no different, Paul McGowan collecting a flick-on from Steven Thompson before running forward and slotting past Cammy Bell in the ninth minute. Usually the early scorer ends up losing but that wasn't the case tonight, even though Craig Samson did well to deny Gary Harkins and then keep out James Fowler's rebound.
However, we weren't sitting on our lead and Nigel Hasselbaink spurned a couple of chances before we got our second right on half-time. The Imrie and Jeroen Tesselaar combination once again did the business on the left and the latter fired in a cross that Thompson volleyed home in terrific style.
However, it's never that easy with Saints and 10 minutes after the break Kilmarnock had a penalty after McGregor was deemed to have handled inside the box. Thankfully, Dean Shiels' spot-kick wasn't great and Samson made a terrific save.
The home side went for it but couldn't get a goal back but it was Saints who had the better chances, McGowan going close to getting a third before his replacement Gary Teale spurned a late chance while one-on-one.
Two goals, three points, a clean sheet, a record SPL points tally and position - not a bad night's work! Now let's go and get seventh.
