A relatively strong Saints side went behind midway through the first half when Iain Russell took advantage of some slack defending to put Morton in front. The lead didn't last long, however, with Mark McAusland - wearing a Terry Butcher-style head band - headed in the equaliser from an Andy Dorman corner.
Morton had the better of the first half with Saints controlling the second, but neither side could find the winner. With the scores tied at 90 minutes, the match went straight to penalties and it was 4-4 after the five had been taking, meaning sudden death was required. Garry Brady scored his spot kick but Howard saved from Peter Weatherson to ensure the cup was going back to Paisley once again.
