Morton 1-2 Saints

Last updated : 22 July 2006 By Stuart Gillespie
Saints cause was helped when Morton were reduced to ten men in the first half when Peter Weatherson was sent off. Kean opened the scoring shortly after half time, but Morton managed to fight back and equalised through Ryan Harding with around fifteen minutes left.

With the scores still level after ninety minutes, extra time was required. It looked as if penalties may even be needed, but just five minutes from time McGinty scored the winner. Two years ago McGinty was sent off in the same fixture at the same ground and has scored just three penalties since. Will this goal see him improve for the new season?

The Saints lineup was: Bullock, van Zanten, McGowne, Potter, Broadfoot, Brady, Murray, Brittain, Lappin, Sutton, Kean. The subs were: Millen, Corcoran, McGinty, I. Anderson, Reid, Maxwell, Burke. Can we assume that this will be the lineup when we face Caley Thistle next week? Probably not.

I wasn't too bothered about this competition, and I'm still not. We didn't get any red cards ourselves, which is good, whilst there is no news of injuries. Morton have won the final the last three years and went on to have poor seasons (by their standards), so let's hope the jinx doesn't strike us.

One of the positives of this result is that it should stop the five year old Morton fans invading our site boasting about their win in the diddiest of all diddy trophies. I apologise in advance for any silly wee St. Mirren fans going on Morton sites and doing similar.

Mind you, conceding a goal to Brian McGinty is almost worthy of a slagging in itself, regardless of the circumstances...
