The old cliche about playing better and losing is probably true about this one. We were far, far better on Monday against Hibs and only drew, yet a below par performance got us a win!
As expected, Will Haining and Jim Hamilton came in for John Potter and Billy Mehmet. Motherwell were the better side in the first half, with John Sutton and David Clarkson going close. However, right on half time Dorman's clearance found Dargo and the striker raced in on goal before tamely shooting straight at keeper Graeme Smith.
Mark Howard did well to save a header from former Saint Sutton in the second half and Brian McLean headed over before Saints snatched the lead. A Saints attack was only cleared as far as Hugh Murray and the midfielder picked out Dargo in a wide area. When he crossed the ball in, defender Mark Reynolds made a hilarious mess of things and gifted Thomson a tap in for his first Saints goal.
If that goal was scrappy, the second was anything but when Dorman was given time and space to steady himself and crash a superb shot into the roof of the net from 30 yards. A goal of the season effort that also meant Saints surely couldn't blow victory now - although we did try when Stevie Hughes hit the post with a header!
Fortunately, that was as close as Motherwell came as Saints played out time for a superb victory. We're up to eighth - although it's a false position as everyone else plays today - but it's a welcome boost ahead of the run-in and the Scottish Cup semi-final.
