Aside from a brief spell in the second half, there was little to get too excited about - regardless of who you support. Ryan McCay was restored to the starting lineup and quickly showed why Stirling fans reckon he was one of the poorest players they had seen for some time. In fairness, most players were poor but he was probably the worst of the lot.
In a poor first half, Brendan McGill hit the bar early on for Gretna with a long range shot while Andy Dorman presented Craig Dargo with a decent chance, only for the striker to get the ball stuck under his feet. Saints had a few other good chances with Billy Mehmet shooting straight at Greg Fleming and Franco Miranda firing over with his wrong foot. However, a mistake from home keeper Mark Howard nearly handed Gretna the lead, the former Arsenal man missing a cross and Ben Wilkinson heading just over the bar. Fleming was having a similar problem with crosses but - unsurprisingly - Saints failed to take advantage of them.
McCay made his one useful contribution to the game just after the break when he crossed for Dargo, but the striker - who is infuriating the Saints support more and more with every passing week - failed to get a good shot away and Fleming made a decent save. Then Saints decided to change things, replacing McCay and Jim Hamilton with a pair of Stephens - O'Donnell and McGinn. It nearly worked too.
McGinn shot over after O'Donnell's free kick wasn't cleared before the latter released Dargo, only for him again to take too long and allow Fleming to save. Seconds later the ball bounced off of O'Donnell into Dargo's path, but he was offside. It didn't matter though, with Dargo signalling he wasn't going for the ball, which allowed Dorman to race onto it. After rounding Fleming he had atight angle but still managed to hit the target, only for Kyle Naughton to clear it off the line.
Despite the pressure on their goal, Gretna nearly scored when Gavin Skelton released Brendan McGill, but Howard saved his shot. Saints attacked straight away with McGinn bringing another good save from Fleming.
After that spell of 15 minutes or so, things got boring - save for a late "goal" when Billy Mehmet's flick on was hammered home by Stewart Kean. Sadly, play had already stopped as Kean was offside.
Overall, a poor game and a poor performance. Most of our players already seem to have decided the season is over, but that doesn't excuse the poor attitude and quality of play. It simply wasn't good enough and if we repeat that in our next two games we'll end up 11th and be hammered by Rangers.
