Saints 0-0 Hibs

Billy Mehmet and Dennis Wyness both spurned second half chances that would have given us a good win at the start of the packed month of November, however both were wasted. Somehow, we failed to score against a defence that included Yves Ma-Kalambay, Rob Jones and Souleymane Bamba. Surely a sackable offence for the manager of the month!

Mirren Mad suggested one of Will Haining or Franco Miranda should probably be dropped after last week's mistakes and in the end the former missed out, although through injury rather than anything else. Steven Robb came back into the side as Saints reverted to a 4-4-2 in a bid to deal with Hibs' three main strike force. It was a job they did admirably, with few problems posed by Derek Riordan, Steven Fletcher and Colin Nish.

Saints threatened first with a curving shot from Garry Brady that, for once, caused Ma-Kalambay few problems. Miranda then had a shot deflected for a corner that almost cost Saints a goal as the resulting dead ball was poor and Hibs attacked. Fortunately, John Rankin's shot was weak and easily saved by Howard.

That was about as close as Hibs came to a goal in the first half, aside from some free-kicks from Riordan. Saints didn't exactly threaten much either, despite playing some good football, as the killer ball always seemed to be lacking. Just before half time they suddenly woke up, with Mehmet, Robb and Miranda all bringing saves from Ma-Kalambay - who was having a good game against us for once.

In the second half Riordan brought a double save from Howard that seemed to suggests Hibs had suddenly stepped up a gear, but they hadn't. Instead, Saints resumed control. Jack Ross put a shot over before Mehmet headed well wide from Miranda's cross when he should at least have hit the target. He argued that it wasn't him that headed it and it should have been a corner, a claim the referee ignored.

If that was bad, what Wyness did a few minutes later was arguably worse. Brady released Shuggy Murray and his cross found the forward, only for him to take several touches when one would have been more than enough. The Hibs defence couldn't believe their luck and were able to block his weak shot when it eventually arrived.

The lack of a killer final ball was still frustrating Saints. Robb and Miranda were playing brilliantly on the left - until it came to crossing the ball. As a result, Hibs were able to come back into things with Dean Shiels producing a fine shot on the turn that went wide. There were a few other shots that proved to be easy enough for Howard to deal with, although late on a swerving effort from Fabian Yantorno needed to be tipped behind.

That was pretty much that after that, aside from Andy Dorman - on for Brady - dragging a shot wide. A draw was probably a fair result - although we looked the more likely to win. Our strikers really need to start taking chances when they come along as their misses could easily prove costly.
