Seven goals and eight points in 2007 at your own ground is a terrible return and supporters who have splashed out on season tickets would be almost within their rights to ask for their money back. 2008 can't be anywhere near as bad, and it mustn't be allowed to be considering it is our final year at Love Street.
In fairness, this defeat was different. Unlike most, we played well and deserved at least a point from the match. That we didn't get one was unjust, with even Aberdeen boss Jimmy Calderwood admitting his side were lucky to win. Sadly, a mistake five minutes from time handed victory to them on a plate.
Saints dominated the first half, with Billy Mehmet shooting Franco Miranda's cross wide when he should have hit the target, while Miranda and Kean headed corners narrowly over the bar. Aberdeen rarely threatened, putting some laughable efforts well wide of the goal.
The second half saw more of the same, efforts just over from set pieces or terribly wide from both sides. The introduction of Sone Aluko by Aberdeen provided some more amusement when he went on a run, put the ball out and was promptly flattened by John Potter. Even better was the fact he got away with it!
Aluko nearly got his own back with less than ten minutes left when he brilliantly found Steve Lovell in the box, but his shot was well saved by Chris Smith. However, with five minutes remaining Lovell was picked up by a shocking header from Reid, and the striker made no mistake this time as he wrapped up all three points.
We deserved at least a draw, but again we rarely worked the visiting keeper with anything other than long range shots. We had a few efforts just wide, which is an improvement, but apart from that there was little to write home about.
Roll on next year and better home form, as well as the return of Craig Dargo and the arrival of Andy Dorman.
