Rangers left most of their big names at home, with the only starters of note being Stefan Klos, Marvin Andrews, Chris Burke and Nacho Novo, although new signing Federico Nieto started as well. Dany N'Guessan was on the bench, along with the likes of Dado Prso and Steven Thompson. New Saints signings John Potter and Mark Corcoran started, whilst Kirk Broadfoot returned to central defence after he played elsewhere on Saturday.
Saints started the game brightly and even managed to force the first corner of the game. Sadly that seemed to be a mistake as Rangers scored from it! Klos caught the ball and punted it forward to Ross McCormack. He controlled it and layed it off to Novo, who skinned his marker and played it back to McCormack to fire past Craig Hinchcliffe. A goal with their first attack, not good. Is that the sounds of some floodgates opening I hear?
Fortunately it wasn't and Saints were arguably the better of the two sides in the first half of the match. They seemed willing to push forward but then got a bit clueless when they got within range of goal, which explains why Corcoran and Simon Lappin wasted a few chances by dragging them well wide of goal. Broadfoot put a free kick just wide, whilst Nieto headed tamely past at the other end. It's fair to say that if Rangers are pinning their hopes on him they can forget about the title now.
Half time saw the usual raft of substitutions, with the useless Nieto being replaced by Dado Prso. The Croatian was extremely impressive and it's fair to say he is far, far too good for the poor standard of the SPL. He caused Saints no end of problems as Rangers dominated most of the second half, whilst Dany N'Guessan also caused mayehm after he replaced Nacho Novo.
1-0 was a fair result in the end, with Saints playing well but rarely causing a threat, which proves we need another few strikers.
