One win since the end of September. An eight point gap over Dunfermline. No new signings. Players out for a few months. Sod all goals. Any positives? Not really. If people still think the current group of players can stay up then they are wrong. We need new signings before Wednesday, or else we will continue our slow slide towards inevitable relegation.
For some inexplecable reason, Saints boss Gus MacPherson started Andy Millen and Kevin McGowne in defence - despite openly admitting he knew Aberdeen striker Darren Mackie had pace. Why, why, why did he start two defenders with a combined age of 80, especially at the expense of the excellent John Potter? Millen was hooked at half time after a woeful display.
By then it was too late as we were already 2-0 down thanks to goals from Andrew Considine, with woeful defending at both. For the first, the ball should have been cleared before the defender slotted. For the second, Garry Brady should have cleared the ball instead of letting it squirm between him and the post.
It was 2-0 at the break but could have been more, with Chris Smith producing a couple of saves in the second half and Aberdeen having a few near misses. Saints had a few chances in the second half, Potter and Kirk Broadfoot missing some pretty good chances - as did Mark Corcoran.
With eight minutes left, Broadfoot went down fairly easily in the box and Saints were given a penalty. However, just to confirm it wasn't our day, Richard Brittain's spot kick was saved by Jamie Langfield.
Today quite simply wasn't good enough from all the players - but especially Millen and McGowne. Things need to be sorted out or we will be relegated. The strikers aren't getting the service, we're conceding two many goals from set pieces, the team is too negative and the defending awful.
It's a fortnight until the next game, will that be long enough for Gus to sort things out?
