I am rarely happy about missing a Saints home game, especially one that we win, but tonight seems to be one of those occasions where I was quite happy to be in Dumfries instead. With Hamilton content to get men behind the ball in the second half it looked as if we would be taken to extra-time, but fortunately Mair headed in the winner with effectively the last action of the game.
There were plenty of changes to the side that lost to Kilmarnock on Saturday, Graham Carey, Dougie Imrie and Sam Parkin all starting with David van Zanten, Gary Teale and Steven Thompson benched. However, as we struggled to break down Accies - who were creating a few chances themselves in the first half - Thompson replaced Lewis Guy 10 minutes before the break.
The odd chance came Saints way in the second half, Kevin Cuthbert saving from Imrie before Parkin headed a cross wide. With Hamilton getting more and more defensive it looked as if the game was heading for extra-time, but in the 92nd minute Carey's corner was headed home by Mair to send Saints through.
Not only did that prevent extra-time, it also ensured we avoided another cup exit to a lower league side. We've now won two cup games in a row at home, having not won any under Danny Lennon before this season. Hopefully we can continue that run in the quarter-finals and book a place at Hampden.
