OK, so we're still two points above Falkirk - but on current form that isn't going to last. We play them in a week and I have no doubts that they will win. We'll also be extremely luck if we take anything from Wednesday's game at Kilmarnock, so there's a fair chance we could be down this time next week. In my mind, we're as good as down - so should we change the manager? It might provide a quick boost and that's all we need to get across the line.
Today continued his trend of crazy decisions. He finally dropped Mo Camara, but he decided to keep John Potter in the team. Things got even more bizarre during the game. Jack Ross got injured - so we put on Will Haining. Camara may be useless, but why not put him on and switch him and David Barron around instead of putting Scott Cuthbert out there? Things then got even more bizarre when Stephen McGinn, our best performer, was replaced with Stephen O'Donnell before Garry Brady came on for Dennis Wyness - a truly stunning piece of idiocy when we were already 3-0 down at the time. But we had no fit strikers - with Sean Burns mysteriously missing from the bench.
In this terrible showing from our team, there were a few hints that all is not well behind the scenes. For starters, MacPherson and Andy Millen spent much of the time standing in their technical area with the sort of body languages that suggests they don't have a clue how to fix things (which is reflected by our results). At one point MacPherson had to shout three times at Haining - standing just yards away - to get his attention, eventually shouting his Sunday best name William. Late on, Barron went down with a genuine injury and the management shouted at him to get up!
Anyway, enough ranting, onto the game. We could have been in front early on when Andy Dorman was sent through and his shot was parried by Graeme Smith, with McGinn's follow up effort being blocked. Smith spent much of the first ten minutes shouting at the linesman for not flagging Wyness offside when Mark Howard was taking by-kicks, failing to realise you can't be offside from a by-kick. Moron.
Sadly, we weren't able to take advantage of this and Motherwell moved in front after 17 minutes. Steven Hammell was able to cross into the box and Jamie Murphy managed to stop laughing long enough at the horrendous marking to nod the ball past Howard. We could have levelled things when Mehmet was set up by Dorman, but he decided to shoot tamely instead of passing to McGinn. It was therefore no surprise when Motherwell doubled their lead, this time Stephen Hughes seeing a shot hit the post and David Clarkson tapped home the rebound.
As usual, we were clueless up front. Did we get the ball into the box? No, we went sideways or backwards - even our strikers did that. The fans were relatively quiet, which is understandable considering the dross we have been served up this year. They did boo at half time, which was of no surprise, before the genius change of Haining for the injured Ross.
After an hour it was game over, Paul Quinn crossing for Clarkson - again unmarked - to head past Howard. Some fans left, others booed the latest Gus master stroke of replacing a striker with a midfielder. Somehow it worked, Brady crossing for O'Donnell to crash home a volley. Sadly, that was as good as it was to get - aside from Kilmarnock drawing with Falkirk.
We are in big, big trouble. There is no fight in the team whatsoever and I cannot see us getting another win this season. We are relying on other teams dropping points, but I can't see them slipping up enough times to cover for our incompetence.
It's time for Gus to go - but this time next week it could be time for Saints to leave the SPL.
