Saints boss Gus MacPherson decided to stick with the same team that beat Stenhousemuir in midweek, although Craig Hinchcliffe replaced Brian McGinty on the bench. Former Morton man and overrated striker Alex Williams started, but fortunately there was no sign of former Saints ghost Paul McHale. Seems he'll need to wait a wee while longer to come back to haunt us!
Saints should have been a goal down inside the first few minutes. A Clyde free kick was nodded across goal by Craig McKeown, but Tom Brighton's header was somehow kept out by Saints keeper Chris Smith. A few Clyde players appealed for the goal but it wasn't across the line. Phew.
The Saints backline was looking shaky in the first forty five minutes, with Williams and a few other people having half decent chances. Fortunately the ones on target Smith was equal to.
Saints were reduced to long range shooting in the first half, done on the most part by Charlie Adam. Twenty five minutes in, however, a long punt up the field by Smith caused chaos. The two Clyde defenders let it bounce (never a good idea), Stewart Kean nipped in and was fouled. Referee's verdict? Penalty. Kean stepped up and slotted it home for the only goal of the first half.
I suggested yesterday that Graham Roberts was a bit odd with some of his decisions and he proved it today. At half time he switched keepers. Erm, right. Apparently it was tacitcal. How can changing keepers be tactical, is this one good at corner kicks?
Saints dominated for most of the second half, scoring a second with twenty minutes left. Simon Lappin crossed, Billy Mehmet (on for Kean) flicked on and John Sutton headed home. A well worked goal and well taken by Celtic player Chris' brother. Game over.
That was just about it as far as action of note was concerned, although both teams had a few more half chances. Referee Steve Conroy made some bizarre decisions (though not quite as bizarre as Roberts), giving Saints some suspicious free kicks and once letting play continue after a foul for a few seconds, whilst Clyde had the ball, before giving us a free kick!
Another comedy moment was when former Celtic player Joe Miller was introduced, much to the delight of the Saints fans who shouted "Weeeeeeeeeee" every time he got the ball from then on. Original? No. Big and clever? Nup. Funny? Bloody right, and yes I am that immature!
Clyde are more attacking than last season but need to sort a few things out. They are narky and niggly, and two of their players fought with themselves!
On the whole, a good performance from Saints, with Lappin, Sutton, Adam and Smith all having good games. My only complaint is that Adam needs to shoot a bit more rather than pass or keep running, and vice versa.
Roll on Motherwell on Tuesday, though it will be tough as they won 5-0 today!
