We were magnificent, whilst Motherwell were poor, and on today's basis you have to wonder how we struggled so much against the likes of Brechin and Clyde in recent weeks.
After a few earlier scares, Saints dominated the first half but somehow only managed to score one. Mark Corcoran rounded the keeper before firing against the post when the angle got too wide, whilst Stewart Kean fired over and forced Motherwell keeper Graeme Smith to make a good save with one of his efforts.
The opener came almost exactly midway through the half. Corcoran took the micky out of his marker and cut the ball back to Charlie Adam, who fired straight at Smith. The shot might have been at the Motherwell goalie, but he only got a touch to the powerful shot and couldn't keep it out. Love Street errupted, and it wouldn't be the last time in the afternoon that that would happen.
Corcoran continued to take the micky out of the Motherwell defence, and one run included some Kirk Broadfoot type showboating with dragbacks and the like. Top stuff, and why hasn't he been playing earlier in the season? Not that we've struggled without him mind you!
Motherwell pushed at the start of the second half but couldn't make their possession count. What few chances they had were either high and wide or just straight at Smith with little power and caused the Saints keeper few problems.
Saints doubled their advantage with around fifteen minutes left. Simon Lappin's free kick found John Potter, and the defender headed brilliantly past the helpless Smith. Cue "Easy" chants from the Saints support.
The third came in injury time, when lappin found sub John Sutton, he found Adam and Graham Roberts' favourite midfielder shot past Smith, allowing the "Easy" chants to begin once again.
A thoroughly deserved win for Saints with no real failures. Corcoran and Adam were outstanding, as was Ian Maxwell who replaced the injured Broadfoot. Kean did well despite scoring, whilst the defence had a great game. The only complaint I have is that we didn't see more of new signing Iain Anderson, but that's a minor quibble more than anything else.
Motherwell were fortunate to win 2-0 in the League Cup earlier in the season, so this more than makes up for that. On this showing, we're more than ready for the SPL. Now let's make sure we get there.
