Saints 5-1 Ayr United

The wait for a home cup win under Danny Lennon is finally over - at the seventh time of asking. The size of the win is also some payback for last season's defeat to Ayr in the quarter-finals - although considering what was at stake it doesn't really make up for it.

There were three changes to the side that drew with Motherwell on Saturday as Sam Parkin, Dougie Imrie and David van Zanten made way for David Barron, Gary Teale and Lewis Guy. The latter was making his first appearance since the opening day of the season and didn't take long to get back in the groove, Paul McGowan setting him up for the opener after little more than quarter of an hour.

Any fears that this would be another struggle against a lower league side quickly disappeared as Steven Thompson headed in Graham Carey's corner before McGowan got the third with a sumptuous chip. A cricket score looked possible after Carey was brought down inside the box and Kenny McLean scored from the spot, but a mistake from Craig Samson just before half-time let Michael Moffat get one back from Ayr.

However, any thoughts that an unlikely comeback was on disappeared just before the hour mark when Gary Teale drilled in the fifth and final goal against his former club. Job well and truly done and for once we did exactly what we should be doing when facing with a lower league side at home.
