St Mirren 6-2 Ayr- Match Report

Saints hit Ayr for six to maintain survival bid

Last-placed St Mirren's remarkable upturn in form continued with a crushing 6-2 victory over Ayr that moves them to within a point of their opponents.

The game was as good as over inside the opening 36 minutes, with rampant Saints scoring four times without reply, allowing them to cruise to a fifth win in their last seven matches in the Ladbrokes Championship.

Stephen Mallan got the ball rolling after five minutes when he fired home from the edge of the area, before turning provider with a cross that Gary MacKenzie headed home to make it 2-0 in the 20th minute.

Captain Stephen McGinn added another three minutes later on his 100th appearance before Kyle Magennis made it 4-0 with a fine finish.

Lewis Morgan charged through to make it 5-0 in 52nd minute before second-bottom Ayr finally gave their fans something to cheer about when they pulled two goals back through Paul Cairney and Farid El Alagui.

But, fittingly, it was St Mirren who had the final word as Cammy Smith finished things off after John Sutton's header had come back off the bar.
