A relatively strong Saints side featured a trialist believed to be former Kilmarnock, Rangers and Hearts winger Allan Johnston. The 35-year-old has been injury prone throughout his career and is struggling with fitness at the moment - but he is a winger, so I suppose that's something!
Judging by the text updates on the Wigan website, it seems they controlled most of the game and scored after 27 minutes thanks to a fine free-kick from Jason Koumas. However, a few minutes later some slack defending allowed Craig Dargo in to equalise, with the help of a deflection from Titus Bramble.
Wigan restored their lead just after the break from another free-kick, this time scored by Hugo Rodallega. Soon after they got their third, Mario Melchiot scoring in spectacular style with an overhead kick at a corner. That was the end of the scoring, although Dargo and sub Tom Brighton both missed decent chances for Saints.
Nothing to be embarrassed about as Wigan are a far, far better side than ourselves. The only worry is the loss of so many goals from set pieces.
